HOLMES: And also here, of course, is Aisha Harris. Here with me and Stephen today are our fellow POP CULTURE HAPPY HOUR hosts, Glen Weldon. And in this episode of NPR's POP CULTURE HAPPY HOUR, we're competing to find out who knows our listeners best. And who is the best Chris? I'm Stephen Thompson. We've got NSYNC versus the Backstreet Boys. Showing off their own heartthrob Nick Carter and his silly '90s bowl cut, BSB is taking the month of May for itself, calling it "As Long as You Love May.In honor of the upcoming clash between same-day releases of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," we asked our listeners to weigh in on some of pop culture's most contentious matchups. The boy band, who is still working and promoting its latest album In A World Like This, has invented their own meme playing off their breakthrough hit " As Long as You Love Me." Yesterday, Timberlake's photo circa 2000 was making huge waves around Tumblr, Twitter and other social media sites with the infamous phrase "It's Gonna Be May" (meant to mock his odd singing voice in NSYNC's No Strings Attached classic " It's Gonna Be Me").īut, just like back in the day, Backstreet Boys aren't about to get left behind. But now, BSB is trying to claim the whole spring month for themselves with their own May themed meme. Today, as we all know, is May 1, meaning yesterday (April 30), the Internet was filled to the brim with Justin Timberlake "It's Gonna Be May" memes. It might seem like it's been years since the battle of boy band supremacy was fought between Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, but now it seems like a certain meme has sparked competition between to '90s superstars yet again.
